Such is life

Life is when you spill your coffee and get hit in the head with a falling broom simultaneously.

This just happened while I was plugging in the new and improved “broom” we call a Swiffer. It was as if the broom was mad at me because we now only use it’s sorry butt for swatting bugs outside.

Not my chair, not my problem.
Out with the old and in with new. Such is life so you better keep up, ice your head and brew more coffee!

“I thought that if I didn’t go and play
The sadness would get bored and go away”
— Michelle Featherstone “Coffee and Cigarettes”
The Year Anew

Woke up January first to french toast. The breakfast itself, honestly, was not that good. But the thought behind it? Very worthy of the year anew.

Something about thought behind actions makes you think, not only about other’s actions and thoughts (train to destination), but it makes you think of your own. We do everything for a reason, therefore there must be a reason for everything. Who knew?

I did. And always have. But with every year you tell yourself you’re going to be a better person isn’t enough. You can’t just tell yourself you’ll change or be better or do this or that… You have to do it. BE THE CHANGE. That’s how real change works. Yes, our actions are initiated by thoughts, but they are just thoughts until you decide to act on them.

Dreams are just dreams. And words are just words. Actions, though. They start wars. They start relationships. They change you.

Most of our time we spend sleeping, our brains are actually running, nonstop. We dream, although we may not remember. But they are there. There are always thoughts… in and out, known or unknown… they are there.

I hope to let things “happen” to me less, and let the change be initiated by me, more.

Sometimes I don’t think I make sense, but I’m about 77% sure that makes sense.

You can listen to The Weepies and Benjamin Francis Leftwich all you want, but these songs you choose to listen to won’t help fill any void you may have. There’s not much that can. But you can.

“I’ve got a plan. I’ve got an atlas in my hands.” -BFL

A plan is just a plan like a dream and a thought and a feeling are just dreams and thoughts and feelings.

I wished for you too, but it doesn’t change anything.

This is not a start of a blog. It’s something to start the year off and be able to look back when its 1/1/2013 and say, “Hey! I remember that person.”

But we’ll always be the same person. Just a person growing. People don’t change, but it doesn’t mean they can’t. They just find it easier not to.

I say to hell with living “right” because that’s not realistic. Everyone’s version of “right” is different. To you and to me. Live your own. That’s about all you can do. Make mistakes and relish in them because hopefully you only make them once. And if you make them twice or five times, like me, then hopefully you keep learning and realize what I realized in 2011: “Things are going to happen in your life, and to you, that you can’t control. That’s no reason to shut out the world.” Okay, I didn’t realize it, someone else did, but I realized it’s true.

It’s important to find the truth in things, people, and yourself. Ask the questions you want the answers to. And “If you’re not getting answers, ask better questions.”

Not one situation is the same as the last, so with experience I say it’s all weird. There are going to be things you made happen and others made happen, but the key is how you react to both. The key is your outlook and your actions following. You can be the happiest person on earth, but we are living in reality. “Happiness is what you’re feeling when you’re not miserable.” So enjoy the little things. I’m trying not to take anything for granted, write down everything that makes me think more, and just relax. Be the change you want to see.

“Always throw spilt salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can.”

So maybe my year will end with that crappy french toast and a good thought behind it. Maybe it’ll be cold pizza. Whatever it may be, I’ll be that change that gets me there.

Joe Purdy – “Troubadour”

Joe Purdy is an acoustic music machine.  Releasing a dozen records over the course of the last decade, he’s an artist that takes some digging into to get a full scope of his sound.  Joe Purdy is a balladeer, a musical troubadour that is best heard live.  Most of his songs are sparse, acoustic numbers, but he does go out on a limb with an electric blues vibe on a couple of albums.  His songs seep with honesty.  I believe in what he’s singing regardless of the words due to the soul inflection in his voice.  He’s a little Warren Haynes mixed with Joe Pug, but Purdy has been able to build his own identity with a dedicated fanbase that extends well beyond his homebase of Los Angeles.  All of his albums are streaming on his website, so dig in if you like what you hear.  Interestingly enough, it has been over a year since the release of his last album This American, so expect new songs to be featured in his SXSW set.

Amazing.

Chrismukkah

We start this annual holiday with decorations and cheer and end it with presents and gratitude once it’s over. Be thankful for what you have, who you’re with, and the fact that you are still alive enough to enjoy these things and these people you have.

Appreciate the humor and irony in life and don’t take anything for granted.

Flash-forward: You’ll be looking back and wishing you would have enjoyed these moments more and worried less.

“You can’t ruin Chrismukkah. It’s got twice the resistance of any normal holiday.”
